Does this diagram make sense?
Not so much, no. At least, I’m having issues with it … and I’ve been a networking professional for more than 25 years.
Diagrams are best scoped to the OSI layer you’re talking about, in my experience. For my home lab I have a huge layer 2 diagram, and a totally different one for layer 3.
If you’re asking about ‘LAN protected by Netgate’, then we’re concerned with layer 3 - so I’d omit the patch panel and illustrate things from a layer 3 point of view.
That aside, it looks like yes, your whole LAN will be ‘behind’ your Netgate. I can’t speak to the specifics of the C1300 you mention though as I’ve never used a Netgate product.
I mostly agree, and did the same with my second gen lab build - instead of shiny new NUCs like I had used round 1, I bought old off lease Dell Xeon boxes. SO MANY PROS -
The downsides can’t be denied though -
The same holds true for off-lease SFF stuff, Lenovo and the likes …
So while reuse/repurpose is absolutely of the utmost importance, no question - when it comes to technology and how quickly it advances and miniaturizes, a thorough and logical pros/cons list is often required.
I’d add another option though - if you do need what a Pi brings to the table - do you really need a shiny new Pi 5? Is it possible a used Pi 3 or Pi 4 would do the trick, and check the reuse box?

“Movie released in 2024/2025 beats movie released during pandemic at box office”
What makes headlines these days boggles the mind.
I saw 3 just yesterday, and personally I thought it was the worst one so far?! But my now 14 year old son disagreed and thought it was the best one so far. Metacritic seems to agree with him too.
I don’t know, maybe I was having an off day or something. I felt like it was aimed at a slightly younger demographic than the last couple? Like, pre-teen at best? I didn’t get that feeling from the first two.
Woa, hit the breaks on the rebuild.
I’m old and my memory is going, but I know I’ve had this before …
I think I had to figure out how to -
I know this seems like it should be block level and that shouldn’t matter, and I could be remembering wrong - but I really think I went down that path and it ended up being the solution.
I have a Flag Smashers shirt… go figure, they speak to me.
I was putting it on a couple days ago and I paused and thought about it, and suddenly realized the immensity of the propaganda - the great Captain America destroying the evil socialists who think resources should be shared by everyone, and that nationalism is a barrier to truly having ‘one human family’.
Blew my mind it took me this long. Also made me wonder if they were dug up from long ago comics when America was openly and blatantly monitoring and persecuting socialists and communists (specifically picturing the scenarios and time illustrated in Oppenheimer). Haven’t had a chance to dig in to that part yet, but I will right now!
lol, saw title, came to say ffmpeg, read body, it’s your prime example!
I can’t remember what flag or feature it is I’ve more than once found myself having to build from source to enable, but there is one!
Personal?

My homedir is a HUGE MESS.
Work?

i.e. ~/src/github/mirantis/docker (not real I don’t imagine, just an example)

I’ve been very happy with my Monoprice “Blackbird 4K DisplayPort 1.4 USB 3.0 4x1 KVM Switch, 4K@60Hz, HDR, YCbCr 4:4:4, HDCP 2.2”. I run an ultrawide at 3840x1600 @ 144 Hz, or HDR at 120 Hz, G-Sync both, and it works wonderfully. It took some effort to get all the required devices using the same connections - went through quite a few “USB-C to DP” cables from Amazon that had to be returned because they couldn’t do the high refresh like they claimed … but once I got everything set up, it’s worked like a dream, 3+ years and counting now I think.
I disagree entirely - the first one I saw was comparing the base model iPhone 16 to a flagship Sony from some years back. This was spot on, and I loled hard. Kudos @[email protected]
This is literally the point of a homelab. I mean not so much the hardware stuff, that sucks, but hell yeah, breaking shit is how you learn! You do not learn JACK following a tutorial to the letter and everything going perfectly.
I learned about 16 years ago on a Solaris course that /usr wasn’t “user”, I still say “user”, but I’m happy to see the information spreading that that isn’t what it actually is.
Google “UltimaHoarder/UltimaScraper”
LOL!!
The original station was called “City TV”, they had a news program called “City Pulse”. In the late 90s/early 00s they launched a 24h news channel and called it “Cable Pulse 24”. At some point along the journey they shortened to that unfortunate name that I will now not ever be able to see and not laugh!!
